Based on his book Letters from Pakistan: A Himalayan Memoir, Fes’s presentation
recounts his time as a young Ph.D. student on three expeditions to the high
mountains of northern Pakistan on a project seeking to understand the snow and
glacial sources of the fabled Indus River. It’s a story of adventure and misadventure, of
snow science and avalanches, of the day-to-day triumphs and defeats of extended field
expeditions to the world’s highest mountains. A story of three summers spent
navigating an unfamiliar culture, and Fes’s growing affection toward the impoverished
inhabitants of one Himalayan valley. A story of being thrown unexpectedly as a young
man into a leadership role, and of Fes’s struggle to remain connected with the love of
his life at home. Set in the 1980s, his story is framed by the Soviet-Afghan War raging
nearby and the simmering tensions of the ceasefire line that still today divides
Kashmir.
